Behaviour Therapy

Behaviour therapy helps children build healthier patterns of thinking and behaviour. There are a number of different types of behavioural therapy, and our team will recommend the approach that best fits your child.

Cognitive behavioural therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is extremely popular. It combines behavioural therapy with cognitive therapy. Treatment is centred around how someone's thoughts and beliefs influence their actions and moods, often focusing on a person's current problems and how to solve them. The long-term goal is to change a person's thinking and behavioural patterns to healthier ones.

Cognitive behavioural play therapy

Cognitive behavioural play therapy is commonly used with children. By watching children play, therapists are able to gain insight into what a child is uncomfortable expressing or unable to express. Children may choose their own toys and play freely; they might be asked to draw a picture or use toys to create scenes in a sandbox. Therapists may also teach parents how to use play to improve communication with their children.

Systematic desensitisation

Systematic desensitisation relies heavily on classical conditioning and is often used to treat phobias. People are taught to replace a fear response with relaxation responses: first learning relaxation and breathing techniques, then — once mastered — being slowly exposed to their fear in heightened doses while practising those techniques.
